To use or not to use? I only have 9K miles on the clock, I also have a direct injection engine. So what to do?!?

IMHO it's the biggest crock of shit, the only way you can truly clean your injectors is to rebuild them.

I've never used it and I've never had a problem with injectors. (knocks on wood)

DI engines do have that build up issue...but at the same time, the car is under warranty right? Besides to properly clean them you gotta remove them and make them spray the injector cleaner undiluted.

At 9k, I doubt there's too much build-up.

My car on the other hand, has 263,000 miles on the clock.

BG 44k costs about $20, and it puts all those other $5 cleaners you see at the gas station to shame.

I wouldn't bother. I assume this is on the FR-S? Really 9,000 miles isn't very many miles and unless you were deliberately running junk in your fuel system it should be fine. They have dual injection systems and dual fuel pumps anyway, so it's not very likely that you would be able to clean them with a single round of cleaner even if it was justified.

Driving a car isn't usually where you really run into build up, it's when you park it with this modern garbage ethanol fuel.

The cleaners do actually work (just like carb cleaner does), but the good ones that work also damage seals and such if it's too aggressive or the wrong type. Do you have an injector flow testing system setup? A good way to do it outside the car is a DIY setup like this, that way you don't run solvent or something through the whole fuel system for no reason. This is the basic idea, but I rarely test with fuel and usually use it for cleaning them out and prepping new injectors for install to verify functionality.

Really, on a brand new car?

My wifes car does not drive all that much. school, grocery store, friend shouse all in town. rarely does it get out to stretch its legs on a trip. I use it there because it goes a few weeks between tank fill ups and i'm sure all gas isn't equal. but in its 50k mile life, ive only used the injector cleaner twice in 5 years....both times when we did go on a longer trip.

Never used the stuff because I didn't want to risk messing up the seals. My dad always taught me to never put any "additives" in an engine, they're just band aides that hide the problem. I rebuilt my injectors on my old VW eco-diesel when they starting giving me issues.

Won't work on a direct injected engine. The fuel never touches the valves. It wouldn't do much for the injectors either.

Leak stop and the like are band aid fixes, but cleaners are just necessary at a point. No body would think twice about pulling a filter off an old carb and giving it a good cleaning or throwing a rag over it to suck the crap out of the smaller lines. The same thing can happen to fuel injection systems over time, especially with ethanol fuels. The ethanol is probably worse for the fuel system than all the additives combined. If left in a vehicle that hasn't run in a while, it will create a green sludge that looks like pond scum or something that is extremely bad about plugging small lines/injectors.

Good to know, thanks. I still don't trust them though, then again I hate change.

Doesn't really matter. If you are willing to just change out or rebuild the injector, you will be doing the same thing ;) Most people just don't like to remove the injectors. Pulling them completely will always give you a better picture of the actual condition.

Well this is the toyota DI system, which has one in the cylinder and one outside the cylinder, so it may be different.

My dad always taught me to never take short cuts when working on a car because you end up paying double in the end.

I just checked on the FT86 forum...engines blowing up because of the DI system??? This is cray! http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthr…

If you wanna clean them though, use Chevron Techron...but keep in mind that the car is under warranty and that the manual says to not add additives. If they find out they could cancel the warranty in case that the engine blows. Check on the FT86 forum for more help.

This is why I am not adding it, plus it hasn't been used nearly enough time to add that stuff.

Also, it isn't causing engines to explode. . . just to fail. All depends on when you bought the car, mine was not part of the initial batch so woot!

Yeah I kinda pushed it little hehe. I'd say you can wait. New cars wont need an injector cleanup until 100000 km imo.

You only have 9000 miles, do you really think your injectors are clogged? I have 95k miles on my 96 bronco and I've never run a bottle of that snake oil horseshit through the tank.

You are fine, just change the fuel filter when required and you are set.

I have a Ford Fiesta and the manual contains the following warning:

Chemicals or additives not approved by Ford are not required for factory recommended maintenance. In fact, Ford Motor Company recommends against the use of such additive products unless specifically recommended by Ford for a particular application.

I read elsewhere, but can't find it, that they do not want any type of fuel-injection system cleaners used on the car.
